In 2013, global retailer Urban Outfitters launched a line of 'quirky printed socks' featuring the Hindu deity Ganesha. These socks were sold for $8, sparking immediate controversy among Hindu communities worldwide. The product was marketed as a fashionable accessory, seemingly unaware of the profound cultural and religious significance of the imagery used.

Lord Ganesha, or Shri Ganesh, is one of the most revered deities in the Hindu pantheon, widely worshipped as the remover of obstacles, the patron of arts and sciences, and the deva of intellect and wisdom. Depicted with an elephant head, Ganesha is central to Hindu iconography and daily spiritual practice across India and among the global Hindu diaspora. Placing images of deities on items like socks, which are worn on the feet, is considered a grave insult within Hindu custom, as feet are traditionally seen as impure and touching them to sacred imagery is deeply disrespectful.

The appropriation was swiftly called out by Hindu communities and organizations globally, who voiced strong objections to the use of a sacred deity on an item of clothing worn on the feet. Critics highlighted that this act constituted a profound disrespect to their religious sentiments and traditions. The backlash quickly gained international traction, with numerous calls for the retailer to withdraw the product and issue an apology for the cultural insensitivity.

Following the international backlash, Urban Outfitters pulled the Ganesha socks from their inventory.
